Battlestar Galactica

THE CYLONS ARE CREATED BY MAN.

THEY REBELLED.

THEY EVOLVED.

THEY LOOK AND FEEL HUMAN.

SOME ARE PROGRAMMED TO THINK THEY ARE HUMAN.

THERE ARE MANY COPIES.

AND THEY HAVE A PLAN.

This show is my current addiction. I'm hooked.

Top 10: Fave TV Series

I have been planning an "all-time favorite tv series" post for the longest time but could not manage to create a list. Until now.

I guess this is my way of celebrating a milestone in my DVD watching – completing all 202 episodes of The X-Files spread out across 9 seasons. That’s the 3rd series I completed this year after The West Wing and Friends. A total of 593 episodes.

Here's my list.

1. The X-Files
2. The West Wing
3. The Sopranos
4. LOST
5. Friends
6. Six Feet Under
7. Friday Night Lights
8. Veronica Mars
9. Alias
10. Sex and the City

Next on my list: Chuck, Mad Men, Battlestar Galactica. But not necessarily in that order.

Friday Night Lights

I completed my 7-season The West Wing marathon a few weeks back. That was the second series I completed this year after my 10-season Friends marathon. Both series are from completely different genres and won their fair share of critical love, Emmyys, Actors, and Golden Globes. The West Wing was a political drama about Decromats running the White House while Friends was a comedy series about twenty-somethings living in New York. I highly recommend both.

The end of my West Wing marathon meant I'm on the prowl on what TV show to watch next. I planned on The X-Files but I misplaced the 5th season disc. Next was Naruto Shippuuden but I was not in the mood to read subtitles. Ditto to Memories of Bali.

I finally settled on Friday Night Lights. The show is not popular but it is an incredibly good show about a high school football team in Dillon, Texas. It is now in its 4th season in the US and I have just barely started on the 2nd. There is still a lot of episodes to watch but I'm now planning on what to watch next. Perhaps Battlestar Galactica? The Wire? Oz? 30 Rock? Mad Men?

Hiatus

I am no wuss. I confront problems and conflicts head on. I am not the type of guy who downs bottles of beer to escape from personal issues. I don't go partying or sleep around.

I am strong. Or so I thought. Until my recent heartbreak. I did what a wuss would do. I escaped.

To set the record straight, I didn't sleep around. Nor went partying. I did drink bottles of beers. Smoked a few cigarettes. I drew the line there. I didn't wail. I didn't smash things. I was cool on the outside but was actually a wreck.

What I did was I stopped blogging. Some of you may have noticed. I did not approve any of your comments. I didn't comment on my blogroll's recent posts. I distanced myself from the internet. I went on a self-imposed hiatus. And I didn't announce it.

It's been almost 2 weeks since. I didn't want to post more about what I'm going through. I didn't want my blog to be a diary of my current state of mind (emotions?) - mad, sad, disappointed, angry, melancholic.

But I'm back now. I will still write about my loss but not as often as to make you cringe and click that x button faster than one could say SCUD.

*****

Allow me to make updates. Be warned though. This is going to be a long post. My longest, I think.

To start with, I finally bid farewell to my company over a week ago. My last day was not as smooth-sailing and enjoyable as I would have wanted to. I almost butted heads with upper management. Not a great way to end my 2.5-year stay. The day ended in a great way though. I had dinner and a few drinks with a couple of my best buds from the office.

A day after I went to watch the Archuleta/Cook concert at the MOA Concert Grounds. Archuleta was good but Cook was freaking fantastic. He sang 'Always Be My Baby' and 'Come Back To Me' which made me a little bit wistful. Tagos hanggang buto ang lyrics. It was the best way to spend my last night in Manila.

A few hours later (and 3 hours of sleep later) I was at the airport ticket, backpack, and duffel bag in hand. I was, as I mentioned earlier, escaping.

I needed to get out of the city. I needed to recharge. I needed to be with people who would help me forget, even for a bit, her.

So I flew to DC. I spent a week there.
I hugged my 93-year-old lola who, as expected, was ecstatic to see me then immediately asked me for money. Haha. Si lola talaga.

I played with my niece.

I went to the beach.

I bonded with my bro, sister-in-law, cousins, aunts, uncles.

I went to visit my aunt's final resting place. Next week is her first death anniversary.

I sang my heart out during a night of karaoke and over 6 Red Horse Grandes. That was the first time I sang and got drunk with my folks.

I slept too. I slept for like 10 hours a day which is more or less the same amount of sleep spent for 3 days in Manila.

I completed reading Russell Banks' The Sweet Hereafter about a sleepy town in New York coming to terms from a terrible bus accident that claimed the lives of their children. A wonderfully written book. A must read. You guys should also watch the movie adaptation starring Sarah Polley and directed by Atom Egoyan. That is if you want to get depressed.

I watched Sex Drive. It was hilarious. The plot has been done countless times before. Lanky teen desperate to lose his virginity meets a hot chick on the internet, fakes his identity, steals his brother's hot car, and goes on a road trip with friends for an eyeball.

I finished my Season 2 marathon of The West Wing. I have seen all episodes of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The X Files, Lost, Friends and none of these can topple Aaron Sorkin's creation of a fictional Democrat president's stint in the White House on the top of my all-time favorite TV shows. It's extremely intelligent, funny, superbly acted and shot, and full of heart. The rapid-fire dialogue is nifty and reminds me of Mike de Leon's oeuvre. Never mind that there are times I don't get what Leo, CJ, Sam, Josh blabber on, the show still rocks.

I was also able to watch the final performance night and finale of American Idol. I haven't blogged about this show this season but I have made comments on other blogs. That I liked Gokey in the semis but shifted allegiance in the finals when I noticed his song choices was too blah. That I am not a fan of Lambert's screeching although his Mad World and The Tracks of My Tears are two of my personal favorite performances this season. That I was rooting for Kris Allen because he has amazing song choices (Kanye West's Heartless, Falling Slowly from the Once soundtrack to name a couple), cool arrangement, and nice jackets.

I thought the finale was great. From the top of my mind the most memorable were Allen and Keith Urban's duet, Gokey's Hello, Black Eyed Peas, bikini girl and Kara, Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time, and Michael Sarver and that tattooed chick performing with Steve Martin.

Before I forget, Kris Allen won! I'm pretty good on choosing my bets - Underwood and Bice on S4, McPhee and Yamin on S5, Lewis on S6, David Cook on S7.

And yeah. While I was in DC she was on my thoughts . Every day. Morning. Noon. Night. In my dreams. In the middle of watching a movie.

I miss her terribly. And still mad. And saddened by the thought that we can never be together again.

*****

I'm now back in Manila. Plane landed a few hours ago. I'm blogging again. I approved comments. I backread posts from my blogroll. I made comments on their posts. I blog-hopped.

I'm catching up with my reading. Movies to watch. TV show marathons to complete. Hobbies that I put on hold when I met ex.

Now that she's gone. I'm back. With a vengeance.

100

9 months, 4 days, 100 posts. That's a personal milestone, averaging 11 posts a month. Not bad for someone who used to maintain two other blogs and only managed 4-5 posts for each

This blog is stating put (for good) and since the last quarter of last year I started planning my 100th post. I thought of listing 100 things to do in my lifetime, same as raft3r's, but discarded the idea when I could not stretch the list to a hundred. I then contemplated blogging about:

a. my 100 favorite movies. I have more than 100 but could not make up my
mind which movie to scrap from the list. I ditched the idea.
b. 100 best blog posts of others. I have a few favorite posts but it was
too daunting a task rereading every post each blogger from my blog roll
had posted. Maybe next time.
c. my 10 best blog posts. I didn't even come close to making the list. I'm
not a big fan of my writing.

Discarding all three and leaving me with no choice, I reverted to my plagiarized idea. I classified the items into different categories to make it easier to reach 100. And by the way, some of these are fillers.

Scud's Random Thoughts: Part III

Prince of Persia, the video game that to this day I still have to figure out how to play in my psp, is now being shot as a live action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Wohoo! I hope the movie is as bloody as the video game. Hehe...

*****

I watched the last few games of the 2nd and 3rd set of the federer-murray round robin match at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai which the latter won in 3 tight sets 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. It was a fascinating match. Excellent shotmaking. Drop shots, slices, net play, laserlike groundstrokes, unbelievable gets. It was not your typical slam bang tennis.

Two memorable games stood out that Federer won. These were the 36-shot rally late in the 2nd set and the 20-minute 10-deuce 10th game of the 3rd set. I tell you, if they only played those two games in the match I would still have gotten my money's worth. The match reminded me a bit of the classic Wimbledon final played this year.

Here's hoping Nole and Andy win their respective semifinal matches today.

*****

Survivor Update! Charisse won immunity and Vern got the boot. Nagsimula na ang pagtatanggal sa mga Jarakays. Cha's head is in the chopping block next week courtesy of the black pearl but I'm guessing the Naaks will boot out Marlon next. Too bad since Marlon is a pretty good strategic player. Maangas nga lang.

*****

I was scourging for books at Booksale last Sunday and found a copy of Bernhard Schlink's The Reader for 40 pesos. Wohooo! A few weeks back I also found copies of Tom Perotta's Little Children, John Grogan's Marley & Me, and James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. I actually have the last two books but they were too cheap to pass up and in mint condition to boot. Parang binili ko sa Powerbooks.

*****

I finally found a copy of Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood at Bestseller's. It was a little bit expensive than the usual paperback books but what the heck. Nag-iisang copy na lang yun. People who have read the book say that it is similar, and in some way, better than J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. I hope I won't be disappointed.

One time my manager (female) wanted to charge her laptop but since there was no free power outlet on her cube she asked my team lead (male) if she could use my tl's power outlet. My TL agreed. This was their conversation a few hours later:

Manager : TL, pakihugot na nga nyan. Kanina pa yan nakasaksak eh. Nag-iinit na dito (referring to her laptop).
Team Le : (Laughing) Ano'ng ihuhugot ko? Wala naman ah. At ba't ka naman nag-iinit.
Manager : (Laughing) Baliw!

An officemate, who I shall be calling Ms Melamine, started a conversation with me regarding musical plays. We talked about West Side Story which we both watched separately. She babbled on about the other plays she had attended. I feigned interest and played with my pc's mouse instead. After a few minutes, she mentioned that a Hollywood musical starring John Travolta was being locally staged and was grasping for the title. She asked me what the title was. I feigned ignorance.

Allow me to digress a bit. I have to write about this. Hehe. I'm pretty good at remembering movie titles. I remember a few month's back our 16-member team held charades. Local movie titles daw. Each person must write on paper a movie titles that they want the other team to guess. I wrote "Ang Sawa sa Lumang Simboryo". When entry was picked it was a riot. They couldn't figure out what simboryo was. Yza, who unfortunately picked my title, complained incessantly and tried to draw a snake on the white board. Her teammates shouted "Ano yan? Bulate?". More laughter.

Now back to Ms Melamine. I thought for a bit and told her I didn't know what the title was. Then she smiled. Parang alam na daw niya ang title. Sounds like "Paintbrush" daw. I burst out laughing. In between gasps for breath I told her I knew what the title was. "Hairspray". I laughed some more while she pouted and beat my arm with her stuffed toy. Sweet!

Scud's Random Thoughts: Part II

A survey came out friday that the leading presidential candidate for the 2010 elections is Noli de Castro. Wtf! Di na talaga natuto tayong mga Pinoy. Are we seriously going to vote someone who made a career out of reading the news and hosting a magazine talk show? Are we going to vote someone who has not said nary a word regarding the corruption and lies that hound the administration he is serving? Lord help us if he wins.

Venus Williams beat Vera Zvonareva 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the finals of the WTA Championships in Doha. She won an incredible $1.34M for winning all five matches in the 8-woman field tournament. Wow! The commentator mentioned that Martina Hingis and Venus turned professional one week from each other. And that Hingis won her 5 majors even before Venus won her first at Wimbledon in 2000. This year, Hingis has retired and Venus is still in the tour winning her 7th Slam and 5th Wimbledon title. I told a friend a few weeks back that I don't have the same passion for the WTA after Hingis retirement. Bummer.

*****

The ATP Championships (Shanghai Masters) is currently being held in Shanghai. Novak Djokovic has guaranteed himself a spot in the semifinals after winning his first two matches against del Potro and Davydenko. Wohoo! I'm hoping Nole meets Murray in the finals.

*****

On our weekly Manila team meeting last Friday our manager informed us that we can individually talk to the higher management regarding our salary increases. For what? Para lalong mainis? Ma-bad trip? Hindi na. Maghahanap na lang ako ng malilipatan. I actually won't know my increase until mid-December when I turn 2 years but based on ALL who have received theirs, my prospect of getting a decent increase won't happen. Bummer.

Blogging. Ito ang kinahihiligan ko lately. An online journal. Pansin niyo naman halos araw-araw ako nagpopost. Araw-araw din ako nag-tsetsek ng blogs ng iba. Ayos magbasa ng blogs lalo ung mga "personal" bloggers. Sila yung mga nagsusulat about their personal experiences, thoughts, dreams, and aspirations. These bloggers pour their hearts out in their writings, giving me a glimpse of the lives they live. These bloggers inspire and make me forget the sometimes rotten life that I live. Atticus, Duke, Ely, Jayclops, Zherwin - saludo ako sa inyo. Pinapangarap ko that I could write as well as you all do. Props also goes to Raft3r, whose blog I accidentally stumbled on yesterday, who write short but interesting entries.

I chanced upon the TV show A Moment of Truth on Saturday while waiting for the rain to stop. The premise of the show is a contestant is placed on the hot seat and asked very personal and damning questions. After a certain number of questions is answered correctly, the contestant wins $25000 and can go up to $500000. It' showcases man's greed and how man is willing to sacrifice treasured relationships. The guy on the hot seat on Saturday's show confessed tht he maintains a spreadsheet of all the girls he has slept with, that he has had over 100 sexual relations with women, that he got paid for sex in college while his parents, sister, girlfriend, and friend looked on. Then he stopped when he won $100000. I'm not sure if this show is bogus or not but it sure caught my attention. And I have to admit, I was entertained. Aabangan ko yun sa Sabado. Haha...

*****

I finished reading Sebastian Junger's non-fiction book A Death in Belmont about a serial killer, aptly named Boston Strangler, who strangled and raped women in the 60s in Boston. It is a nice book to read but not one that I would recommend.

*****

Watching A Very Special Love, starring John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, was a welcome respite from the dreary movies I've watched for the past few weeks. The film is not an entirely a love story but also about acceptance. It was sweet, funny, and utterly forgettable.

Survivor Philippines is getting better and better everyday. Kiko's ouster changed the dynamics of the game and made it more interesting. I still hate Marlon even though he's a hoot. Tarantadong gago. He should get the boot but based on what I saw on last night's episode where Nay Zita was interviewed looking fresh and well-rested wearing a yellow-orange blouse (which I think she has not worn in previous episodes) is a telling sign that she gets the boot Friday. Dammit!

Survivor Philippines: Update 5

I got the boot speculation below from dementedness of peyups.

Zita: Marlon, Cris, Kaye, Charisse and Vern will stick to their plan of getting rid of the next threat
Rob: next biggest threat after Zita
Marlon: JC (as I said, feeling ko gagawin nia ang lahat para manalo ng immunity this time) would return to his old allies, Cris and Kaye to vote out ang pinakaayaw niang tao sa tribe, si Marlon.
Vern: mananalo muli ng IC si JC. kaya ang best option is to eliminate the strongest player. Cris, Kaye and JC will vote out Vern
Charisse: mananalo muli ng IC si JC. last original member of Jarakay has to go.
Cris: mas pipiliin ni JC si Kaye dahil mas mananaaig na nabetray ni Cris ang original pordaboys alliance nila ni kiko at rob.
Final two: Kaye and JC
Winner: Kaye

My take. Even though Rob got booted off last night, I'm still hoping which is diminishing by the minute that the remaining 5 Naaks will now vote off Marlon, Charisse, and Vern in succession. It's a long shot now that Kaye and Chris aligned themselves with the Jarakays. Nasa kanilang dalawa na ang power.

Abangan na lang sa Biyernes who will get voted off - Nay Zita (dementedness) or Marlon (thescud).

Survivor Philippines: Update 4

Tama mga hula ko. Matatanggal sina John at Nikki bago mag merge.
Marlon is an evil strategist and Jace can win an individual IC handily. It would be dangerous to keep them in the game longer. Thus, it's a toss up between the two kung sino matatanggal mamaya.
Charisse, my current favorite castaway, has a good head between her shoulders. I wonder how she and Nina would have plotted and schemed. Sayang lang nag-quit si Nina at dehado ang Jarakay sa merge.
Here are my fearless predictions:
1. Marlon and Jace will get the boot this week and the next.
2. Vern wins IC on the 3rd week (ng telecast) of the merge and Charisse exits the game.
3. A Naak wins IC on the 4th week (ng telecast) and votes off Vern.
Sa 5th week ng merge, mga Naak na lng ang matitira. This is where it gets more interesting. May backstabbing na mangyayari. May magagalit. The game gets heated.

Survivor Philippines: Update 3

When I saw the Immunity Challenge teaser for this week on SP's Tuesday episode I knew that Naak was going to win the challenge. The reason? Naak is too strong with four strong men (Rob, JC, Kiko, Chris) while Jarakay only has two (Jace and John) with the latter's fitness still in question.

Based on the teaser for Thursday's episode, the main focus will be on John who seem to be getting weaker. If you remember he got temporarily pulled off the island a few weeks back because of medical reasons. On friday, I'm betting on John getting the boot. He's too much of a liability (although Nikki is still the weakest link) for a very crucial IC next week which will determine if Naak will gain the upperhand in the merge or can Jarakay make it 5-5. If John survives, Nikki gets the boot. Either way, I do think Naak will win next week's IC. That spells doom for Jarakay.

Go Naak!

Survivor Philippines: Update 2

My rants:
1. Talo na naman ang Naak! Bwisit!
2. Si tarantadong Marlon is irritating. Yes, I admire how he strategizes and plays mind games when it comes to alliances but during challenges his mind games is irritating bordering on foul. For the past few weeks since SP started this guy has been slowly getting into my nerves. Antagonist. I also particularly don't like how he registers on screen - mayabang, siga, masyadong bilib sa sarili. Kung naging ka-opisina ko sya, baka walang linggo na di kami mag-aaway.
3. Sayang si Nina. She's an intelligent player but does not comes off as condescending like Marlon. I wonder how far she would have gone had she not had the injury. Siguro she would have made a power play and connived to vote off Marlon.

My speculations:
1. Now that Nina is gone andNaak will be voting off their third member in four weeks of play the number of players from each tribe will be even with 6 team members each. If the spoilers and my speculation from my previous post are true, then Naak will be voting off Vhev tomorrow.
2. If the spoilers are true, then this week will be the last IC where Naak will lose if they were to gain the upper hand when both tribes merge in three weeks.
3. The next two weeks will be crucial to determine if the spoilers are indeed true. Naak will have to win the next two ICs so that when the tribes merge there would be 6 Naaks and 4 Jarakays. Naak could then vote off the 4 remaining Jarakays, that is if the lone Jarakay standing doesn't win the IC when 7 castaways remain.
4. It is also possible that when the tribes merge there would be an equal number of members from each tribe. For the spoilers to be true, then one of the Jarakays will vote with Naak. But I think that this scenario is unlikey to happen.

My fearless forecast for next week's boot:
Naak will win IC. Jarakay votes off John on Oct 17. Why John? He's becoming a liability - see how John was visible trembling during this week's IC.

If John gets the boot and the IC on the week of Oct 20 will be extremely physical (Jace and Marlon na lang ang natitirang lalaki) then wala silang laban against Naak who would still have Cris, JC, Rob, and Kiko.

Survivor Philippines

Warning: Spoilers abound!

I just saw an episode of Survivor Philippines (SP) where Naak, my favorite tribe (hehe), lost again in the reward challenge where they had to wrap and unwrap themselves with a long strip of cloth. Again, when the series episode focuses on a challenge (reward or immunity) it sucked. The editing is horrible. You don't know which team is leading. In this case, Naak was leading at the start of the challenge but in the end Jarakay beat them. I don't what the hell happened. The editing didn't show why Naak lost their lead. Crap.

The show is more interesting when they focus on the goings-on within the tribe - the alliances, the plotting, the mind games. From what I see on tv Jarakay is a less solid team than Naak I think that would eventually lead to their downfall. That is if the spoilers on the internet are true.

If you've been surfing the net about any SP news or spoiler just like me, which IMO is an indication of a certified SP addict, you'd probably know that JC is rumored to be this season's Sole Survivor. That news is sort of a good news for me since he is one of my bets to do good in the game. The reasons: he's athletic and is a huge help in challenges, he's low-key which is a good thing since most power players usually get the boot before the final four, he has a solid alliance with 4 other tribemates in Naak, and he gets along well with everyone which is also a good thing when the jury votes between the Final 2.

It is said that the other man standing when the jury votes is Cris, who has an alliance with JC and is also physically fit to do well in challenges. I think, though, that he is too strong-headed (a perfect example is his verbal spat with Kiko regarding the correct way to kayak) and may lose a vote or two from the jury members. He may win the game if the jury opts to reward him the money since he needs it more than JC.

But then again, it is still to early to tell. Only four castaways have been voted off the island and 14 remain. Madami pang pwedeng mangyari. But if in the next couple of weeks Vevherly and John get the boot then the spoilers might very well be true.
Other spoilers/forecasts:
1. According to this blogger , the final 4 comprise of Cris, JC, Kaye, and Rob. The person missing from the five-member alliance, as pointed out in yesterday's recap episode, is Kiko who I would assume will be a jury member.

2. Zita reaches the merge based on the pics posted by #1 above.
3. Jace and Veronica reaches the merge. I read somewhere that Chev mentioned that her bet was Veronica pero sayang lang at pinagtulungan. Hmmmm...
4. That leaves two more castaways that will comprise the merged tribe. I'm betting on Marlon (who is an irritatingly good power player) and Charisse. I think Jarakay would gang up on Nina before the merge. The reasons? She's tough. She's intelligent. And she doesn't have a solid alliance.
So here's my list of the merged tribe members:
Naak - Cris, JC, Kaye, Rob, Kiko, Zita
Jaracay - Jace, Veronica, Marlon, Charisse
Charisse will be voted off on the first tribal council as a merged tribe.
These are my fearless predictions. Yours?
I'll continually update this entry in the coming weeks until SP ends in early December.

The Office

The Office (US version) is probably the funniest tv series I've seen in my life. I could not remember the last time I laughed out loud over a TV series or movie. Ally McBeal was funny but that was more like a dramedy. Friends is funny (and has more of a plot than The Office) but I've seen only the first 1.5 seasons so I'll hold my judgment of that show. Below is a description I got from www.imdb.com.

A remake of the hit 2001 BBC TV series The Office (2001), this is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott, a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam, and indifferent temp Ryan.

Steve Carrell's character is borderline offensive and irritating but it is offset by some of the wonderful and weirdly funny characters that make up the show.

I have seen only the first 30 episodes of the show (season 1 - 8 episodes; season 2 - 22 episodes) and the last episode of the second season is one of the best season-enders I've seen in years.
I'm actually looking forward to getting myself a copy of the 3rd and 4th seasons. Marathon ulit!

Scud at the Movies (and Others): Part II

Two 3-day-long weekends. 11 movies. 4 TV series. Not one disappoints.

I just finished watching Control, a tragically terrific movie about Ian Curtis, lead singer of the 1970’s band Joy Division who killed himself at the age of 23 in 1980, a month before I was born. Shot in black and white, this film follows Curtis from his mid-teens up to the time of his death. It showed his struggles with stardom, his commitment to his wife, his conflicted love with a French woman, and a recurring sickness. The film also showcased the band’s songs which were in my opinion brooding, heartbreaking, and full of angst. I’m guessing Curtis was the band’s songwriter and my opinion of the type of songs the band churned out was depicted perfectly by its lead star, Sam Riley.

One of Joy Division’s songs was part also played in the house party scene of the weirdly enjoyable movie Donnie Darko. This is a movie about an out-of-sorts teenager played by Jake Gyllenhaal who sees a demon, masquerading as a bunny rabbit, in his dreams. The bunny rabbit seemingly puts him in a spell in his sleep and later on even when he’s awake and persuades him to commit crimes without being caught. I have read that this movie has been a cult hit since it came out in 2001 and I’m not surprised. The ending is confusing and demands repeated viewing and maybe even heated discussions. Heck, I even googled it searching for some explanation of the movie’s ending. Haha. The confusing ending also reminded me of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, which I saw years ago, which also had a mind-boggling ending.

Grace is Gone. This probably is John Cusack’s career-best performance playing a morose and limping husband of an American soldier deployed in Iraq. When news arrives that his wife Grace was killed in action and unable to break the news to his two daughters he and his kids embark on a road trip to an amusement park in Florida. Along the way, father and daughters bond discovering more about each other. Watch this for Cusack’s breakdown scene in his mother’s house, Alessandro Nivola (playing Cusack’s younger sibling) explaining to his nieces why he and his brother weren’t close, Cusack breaking the sad news to his daughters, and the eldest daughter’s eulogy to her mom. This movie won the 2007 Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and deservingly so.

Grave of the Fireflies. A Japanese animated movie set near the end of the Second World War about two orphaned siblings trying to survive the ravages of war. This is not the typical animated movie churned out by Hollywood where the characters are lovable and always have a happy ending. In this movie we immediately learn that the siblings die and hereon out we go along with their journey from the time where they are driven away from their house due to bombs dropped by Japanese planes, to living with a cruel aunt which drives them to leave and find shelter in a cave. This is a harrowing movie about war and the loss of innocence. This movie is a great addition to the Japanese repository of classic animated movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle among others.

On a more mainstream mode, the musical Hairspray is immensely entertaining from the opening number “Good Morning, Baltimore” to a wickedly funny Michelle Pfeiffer to John Travolta playing an overweight, middle-aged mother of the movie’s main protagonist.

I also saw the surprisingly good adaptation of James Ellroy’s Street Kings starring Keannu Reeves investigating the death of a fellow LAPD officer. Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Hugh Laurie (House), Chris Evans (Cellular), John Corbette (Aidan of SATC), and Amaury Nolasco (Sucre of Prison Break) also star.

Teeth, a Canadian movie, is about a woman cursed (or is she?) with vagina dentate. The guy who sold the dvd to me mentioned that this was a suspense movie although when I watched it I wasn’t scared. This movie is more of a comedy with some nudity, cut male organs, and lots of blood. Ouch.

The second black-and-white film I watched was Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring an overweight Elizabeth Taylor who reportedly gained 30lbs for the role that critics say is her best performance ever. Her real-life husband at that time Richard Burton, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis comprise the 4 main characters of this film. The characters in this movie banter and drive each other to the point of madness which is very enthralling to watch. This film reminded me of Closer, the 2004 screen adaptation of Patrick Marber’s play, about 2 couples whose lives intertwine with disastrous consequences to their relationships. Closer was not blessed by Oscar gold, although Natalie Portman and Clive Owen won nomination nods for their supporting roles, unlike WAOVF which got 13 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and acting nominations to its four stars. Unluckily, the male stars were shut out during Oscar night but Taylor and Dennis won Oscar gold.

On the local scene, I watched Confessional at the Robinson’s Galleria IndieSine which won Best Film in the 2007 Cinema One Originals competition. This is a story about a video editor who goes to Cebu, together with his girlfriend, during the Sinulog celebration to take part in a documentary competition about the religious festivity hoping to win the P50,000 cash prize for the eventual winner. The first half of the film ambles along as the video editor, played by Jerrold Tarog who is the screenwriter and also one of the film’s directors, describes his work as a video editor, how he met his girlfriend of two years and domestic partner of 9 months, his sea trip to Cebu, and interviews with his subjects for his documentary. Then he interviews a retired congressman from Mindanao who then confesses to him the misdeeds he had done when he was still in power. At this point, the film veers away from the “happy-go-lucky” atmosphere it was trudging along during the first half and delves into a morality play. This is a great movie made more interesting by the innovative way the movie was done – there is animation, shooting scenes documentary-style, non-dramatic delivery of lines which is now a staple of Filipino mainstream movies, among others. I also liked this movie because the subjects of the documentary spoke in the Cebuano dialect, thus part of this movie is subtitled, which is my primary dialect (I grew up and finished my studies in the Visayas) and the assassination scene near the end is the place where I and my housemates used to go during weekends and holidays to play badminton, eat our lunch, or just spend a leisurely afternoon walk.

This brings me to the best among the films I’ve seen for the past 2 weekends, Francois Truffaut’s The 400 Blows about a mischievous kid who is largely ignored by his parents and misunderstood by his homeroom teacher. The movie is at times hilarious, sad, and heartbreaking. Jean-Pierre Léaud who plays the film’s protagonist, Antoine Doinel, evokes the turmoil going on the kid’s head even before this is explicitly expressed to us viewers when he is interviewed at the police precinct after being caught stealing a typewriter from his father’s office. The end of the film, when Doinel escapes from the juvenile prison, is classic especially the part where he runs towards the sea then the scene freezes as he stares to the camera. Again, that scene reminded me of the tragic end of Lino Brocka’s Maynila, Sa Kuko ng mga Liwanag when Bembol Roco’s character stares at the camera in terror realizing that he was trapped and faces a very angry mob. Perhaps Brocka got his inspiration from Truffaut?

Addendum:
I also finished the 5th season of one of my all-time favorite TV series, The X Files, which is probably the best season I’ve seen from the show. This is the season where the government conspiracy talked about in previous season is explained.

Another TV show season I finished was Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. This is a terrific adaptation to the small screen of James Cameron’s Terminator trilogy. The actress who plays Sarah Connor has a voice eerily similar to Keira Knightley. This series also got me excited over the new Terminator movie starring Christian Bale as John Connor although I’m a bit apprehensive since James Cameron is no longer at the helm but McG.

McG incidentally is also one of the directors of the series that I am now halfway through finishing, Chuck. This thoroughly entertaining series is about a geeky electronic store supervisor who knows about the US government’s confidential secrets and intelligence with the “help” of his estranged Stanford college roommate.

BBC's Planet Earth is an 11-episode documentary narrated by David Attenborough about the natural wonders of planet earth. There are lots of breathtaking shots and never-before-seen footages of predators hunting for its prey, a panda giving birth, Siberian cats, and caves among others. I saw a clip of the US version narrated by Sigourney Weaver but her voice is not as enchanting as Attenborough's. Watch this 5-year-in-the-making Emmy Award winning series for its sheer scope, magnificent cinematography, and a greater appreciation of our planet.

Friday Night Lights

I have seen great tv series like the mafia-inspired The Sopranos, the dysfunctional Fisher family of Six Feet Under, the paranormal-centric The X Files, and most recently Lost but these shows are not as real or as gritty or as "relatable" compared to Friday Night Lights. Some may have their reservations since the show's title suggests that the storyline revolve around football but trust me that in this tv show football takes a backseat. The show is more about the life of the football players, their coach, their family, their lives. In short, this is a story about relationships - of family, of husbands and wives, of fathers and sons, of fathers and daughters, of lovers, of friends. Remove football from the equation and you have a show that is very Pinoy sans the melodrama and over-the-top-acting.

I'm halfway through the first season and every episode is worth the watch. Now I do hope that the second season doesn't disappoint...
