I was feeling nationalistic over the weekend. So in between shipping my desktop to my hometown and hoarding DVDs in Quiapo and chatting with a good friend over office romance and a 5-hour tennis training I was able to squeeze in three Filipino movies on my tight schedule.
I saw Marian Rivera dance out of a cake in My Best Friend's Girlfriend. This movie proved that Richard Gutierrez can't act and that Rivera is a sight to behold and that Star Cinema makes way better romantic comedies than Regal and GMA Films combined.
I then shifted to Ded Na si Lolo, our official entry to this year's Oscars . The movie about five siblings coming to terms with their father's death is inconsistent, loophole-filled, directionless, and at times hilarious. It is no Departures or Cinema Paradiso or The Lives of Others or Pan's Labyrinth and has absolutely zero chance of getting nominated.
The last film that I saw and hands down the best among the three is Richard Somes' Yanggaw, official entry to last year's Cinema One Originals festival. I dare say it is the best suspense/horror local film I have seen in years. It tells the story of Amor who returns home to her impoverished family in the province after she is turned into an aswang. Cheap scare tactics take a backseat in the film and focuses more on the ties that bind a Filipino family.
Go get yourself a copy of Yanggaw. For the other two movies, you can wait for them to be shown on free TV.

I am not in the loop when it comes to indie films except those that get shown commercially in movie theaters. I guess I just have to google for events to make it simpler for me. As for Yangaw, is its plot inspired by that urban legend about an OFW who returned from work abroad and ate her family?
i rarely watch now but if i do, i'll make sure i'll watch yanggaw... and marian dancing off a cake. :)
naman.. si scud, Ded na nga si lolo, kinatay mo pah.. ahahahaha.. i enjoyed that film ah, i dunno, it's something very Filipino.. =)
' uhm, nasan na ang scientific problem? asan na ang pangarap kong mabasa ditu ah? peace tau scud.. ahahahahaha!
Yung Ded na si Lolo, pinanood ko yun, at ang masasabi ko... wala. Hindi ko alam kung mananalo yun, pero base sa taste ko mukhang hinde. Alam kong pagpapakita lang ng kulturang Pilipino pero masyado kasing ininject ang mga kulturang iyon sa kwento! basta di ko gusto yun!
Ingat lagi bro
I love the way marian rivera dance on the cake.. i love to watch her dancing... coz she dance gracefully.
Of the three, it's only My Best Friend's Wedding that I was able to watch. But it's actually better than Richard and KC's first movie team-up.
And yes, Richard G. can't act. That is why I'm completely disappointed when he landed the lead role in the Filipino adaptation of Full House.
parang na-disappoint ako sa quality ng movies at actors natin. haaay.
Way to go, getting nationalistic through pirated dvds. haha!
I haven't seen any of those three films, as two of them didn't spark interest in me, and the other one, I didn't hear mention of until now.
Yanggaw seems interesting, it makes me wonder whether blood or bloodlust would prove more powerful than the other. I'll try to look for a copy.
Ded na si Lolo relied too much on the actors' showbiz persona, and if you aren't familiar with the actors, you'd probably feel alienated by their antics.
I'm the least interested over Richard and Marian's antics, never mind how enticingly Marian dances on a cake.
hmmm... mapanood nga yang yanggaw... nakikita ko yan dati sa cinema one eh, pero di ko pa napapanuod.
told you, walang kwenta ang My Best Friend's Girlfriend.
ehem
may kwenta ang my best friend's girlfriend, gillboard
hehe
random student, ngayon ko lang narinig ang urban legend na yan ah. not sure though kung dyan 'inspired' ang movie.
lawstude, unahin mo si yanggaw. si marian nasa tv naman araw-araw. hehe.
lastjedi, the film is very filipino pero it was done poorly.
natapos ko na ung post ko sa scientific problem. i dont know if it will get published. hehe.
drake, gagawa ako ng sex tape pag nanominate yan. LOL.
Yes. Richard and Heart for the Pinoy adaptation of Full House which is one of my favorite Asianovelas.
I absolutely hate Ded na Si Lolo. It's our country's foreign film entry to next year's Oscars, right?
