Scud at the Movies: Part IX

Watchmen. This is the movie adapation of a critically-acclaimed twelve-issue comic book limited series released between 1986 and 1987 about retired superheroes, vengeance, regret, and all those angst. I wasn't expecting a lot from the movie. I just wanted to enjoy the visuals and wonderfully-choreographed fight scenes but what I got were rehashed scenes from past movies. I did enjoy the opening scene. It was cool. The story is a bit complex too. If you want to enjoy the experience, search for a synopsis of the comic book on the net (to avoid getting confused) and don't expect fight scenes similar to 300 (both films have the same director). I dig the look of the film though. And the soundtrack. And Jack Earl Hailey who plays Rorschach. Astig sya. Also, 11 minutes of footage was cut from the film to get the R13 rating but you won't notice where they spliced it.

Rachel Getting Married. Kym (Anne Hathaway) is a recovering alcoholic who is given a weekend pass to attend to her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt)'s wedding. Directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), this is a wonderful movie filled with great scenes (the rehearsal dinner is seamlessly shot and choreographed) and great performances from its support cast. Hathaway is a standout. I even think she gives a better performance here than Winslet in The Reader.

Marley & Me. Owen Wilson & Jennifer Anniston star as a newly-married couple trying to start a family by purchasing a dog, which they name Marley, who bcome a consistent family presence. I had high hopes for this film and I was a bit disappointed. This is not to say this is a bad movie because it isn't. I think this may be because I read the book where this film was adapted from and it was a great read. I even gave a friend a copy of the book. That's how good it was. Watch this. On DVD.

Milk. Sean Penn IS Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man ever voted into public office in America. Gus Van Sant again impresses. This is my fourth favorite Van Sant film after To Die For, Good Will Hunting, and Elephant. Watch this!

I'm going to splurge on DVDs tomorrow. I hope I get lucky enough to find myself a copy of Rachel Getting Married. Darn, that film is elusive!

The last Jennifer Aniston flick I saw is The Object of My Affection. Awwww, that one made me cry. Seriously, I love it.

I'll take your advice, though, and avoid Marley & Me. I saw the trailer and I almost puked. :p

I'm very pleased with the Watchmen, and the sex scene. It stayed faithful to the graphic novel. There were little details in the comics that weren't mentioned in the movie but it's too small to really affect the whole story.

As for Rorschach, he was great. Actually, all of the cast did great.

I liked all the three movies that you mentioned. gus van sant has a very "realistic" way of telling a story...it's real intriguing, but you're usually just a spectator...his movies are desensitizing, in a way. the latest I saw was elephant. I'm looking forward to watching this one.

dong > tell me if you liked it. ako hindi eh. hehe. i may be in the minority though.

andy > good luck sa dvd hunting! object of my affection also stars paul rudd, right?

sonya > i digged the elephant. beethoven! hehe... i saw van sant's paranoid park last year and the critics raved about it. i didn't get the movie. maybe i should watch it again...

gillboard > buti ka pa? i heard the comic book costs 750-900 pesos. ang mahal.

skron > i think fans of the comic book will love the movie. even jessica zafra loved it. hehe... i was expecting fight scenes ala 300. :-(

i think matthew goode's character looked off. i read somewhere that he looked liked Batman's Robin.

Yeah, it's the one with Paul Rudd.

Hey, I got lucky today! I finally got a copy of Rachel Getting Married! I have a strong feeling I'll end up liking this film!

Not much; I only had 20 minutes to go around; had to rush to Galleria for the 6.20pm screening of Padyak. Managed to buy True Blood Season 1 and The Brave One.
